BATHINDA: Two cops were placed under suspension on Monday evening for mercilessly thrashing a couple after tying them with a tree on police station premises.
The victims, Amrik Singh (45) and his wife Surinder Kaur, were admitted to the civil hospital Bathinda after they were rescued.
While the couple's statement was recorded by the police, Bathinda SSP ordered suspension of Ashok Kumar, the munshi of the police station and constable Fauji Ram.

According to the complaint lodged by the couple, Amrik and Surinder on Sunday morning went to the police station to register a case about their daughter who had eloped with a boy and took away some cash and jewellery.
"The munshi demanded Rs 1,000 for registration of the complaint which we doled out after a brief argument. In the evening when we went to the police station to recover our daughter after getting information that the police had nabbed her with a boy, the munshi and the constable started beating us without any reason. We had only questioned them about the arrest of the boy," said the couple.
Amrik alleged that his wife was beaten up by the police with belts while he was thrashed with canes after both of them were tied with a tree on the police station premises.

The couple alleged the cops were angry with them as they had dared to reveal paying bribe to the munshi.
The couple said the cops, who were in an inebriated state, tied them with a tree and beat them up for around five hours during the night.
It was around 1am when the duo was rescued after a family member reached the police station and threatened to bring the matter to the notice of higher officials.
Thereafter, both were admitted to civil hospital Bathinda by the relative. Doctors treating the couple said both had sustained injuries and they had suffered a psychological scar.
When the matter was highlighted, the police tried very hard to "settle" it with mutual consensus. The cops even roped in a woman member of Bathinda Municipal Corporation from SAD to wriggle out of the controversy.
